Dāna Education Flood Relief Effort

We at the Dāna Education wish to take a moment to extend our deepest and most sincere gratitude to our generous supporters. Your unwavering commitment and compassion have been a beacon of hope for our communities, especially in the face of the recent challenges that have shaken the lives of many.

On the night of October 3rd 2024, a second wave of devastating floods struck northern Thailand, severely impacting four of our Dāna Education communities in Chiang Mai. The torrents of water damaged homes, disrupted daily life, and most importantly, jeopardized the education and well-being of the children and families we serve. It was an incredibly difficult time, but thanks to the kindness and swift action of our supporters, we were able to respond with purpose and resilience.

As news of the flooding reached our team, we immediately mobilized and reached out to friends and family for assistance. Among those who answered the call with open hearts were our Australian friends—individuals and families who demonstrated remarkable solidarity and generosity. Through their efforts, we received a total of 63,600 Thai Baht in donations. This contribution became a lifeline for our communities, enabling us to respond quickly and effectively to the urgent needs that arose.

Immediate Response and Impact

The initial funds were used to address the most pressing concerns: repairing the flood-damaged school building and homes within the affected areas. Our learning center, a place of growth and empowerment for the children, suffered significant water damage. Thanks to your support, we were able to carry out essential repairs that restored this space to its original purpose—a safe and welcoming environment where young minds are nurtured and encouraged to flourish.

Health and safety were also of paramount concern. In the days following the disaster, many of our community members—especially the elderly and children—experienced health issues related to the flood. We responded by inviting a team of medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, to conduct thorough health check-ups. Those who were unwell received necessary medications according to doctors' prescriptions, which were also covered by the donations we received. This timely intervention played a crucial role in preventing further health complications and ensured that vulnerable members of our community were not left behind.

Educational Growth Amid Recovery

While addressing immediate needs, we also looked ahead to support the continued growth of our students. The floods had a significant impact on school attendance and classroom space. As our student numbers increased in the weeks following the disaster, we faced a shortage of learning space. To accommodate this growth, we rented an additional classroom at a cost of 4,000 THB per month. Thanks to the remaining funds from our Australian donors, we were able to secure a one-year lease, providing our students with a new, safe, and stimulating environment for learning.

This new classroom is more than just a physical space. It symbolizes resilience, hope, and the unwavering belief in the power of education to transform lives. Here, students not only catch up on missed lessons but are also given the tools to develop critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and a strong sense of belonging. It is in these spaces that the future leaders of our communities are being shaped.

Holistic Support for Community Recovery

Your donations were distributed thoughtfully across various critical areas, including food, clothing, housing repairs, healthcare, and education. Each baht was spent with care and intention, ensuring that the impact would be both immediate and lasting. We’ve attached a detailed report of the funding expenses below for full transparency.
